Then, the motivational system evaluates the situation in terms of success versus failure.
Finally, it strategically deploys the emotion to increase your chances of success or mitigate costs (e.g., triggering pride upon success).
Because our motivational systems inherently resolve competition among competing emotions, they allow us to function smoothly without needing a separate, exhausting supervisory mechanism constantly policing our brains. While emotions give us immediate, acute guidance, our overarching mood sets the macro-context, coloring how we view everything around us.
Clinical Insight: Shifting Your Internal State
Because these systems are hardwired adaptations, you cannot simply demand that your brain stop feeling a certain way. However, because these emotional cascades can be modified over time through practice, you can introduce a new experience using one of three primary clinical pathways:
Want Different? Set a Goal: Because emotions are deployed by motivational systems tracking goal progress, changing your objectives changes your feelings. Establish a meaningful goal and make micro-progress toward it to shift your baseline mood.
Do Different? Lean Into Exposure: If an emotion like fear is holding you hostage, the solution is strategic action. Think of exposure therapy: sitting in the discomfort until your brain realizes the ancestral threat isn't actually present in your modern reality.
See Different? Bring Awareness: Shifting an emotion often requires assigning a new meaning to your circumstance. By noticing the tiny nuances and complex details of your internal landscape, you develop emotional granularity.
